During theVicenza Bible Festival ended on Sunday , among the many scheduled events , one caught immediately our attention and curiosity: the conversation "Faith and freedom in art", with the art critic Philippe Daverio and the historian Timothy Verdon. Luisa and I have always admired Monsieur Daverio for his keen intelligence, for irony and truly unmistakable style. So meeting him in Vicenza was a special occasion. For those who missed the two hours chat in the beautiful church of Santa Corona, here are some notes and reflections of the meeting.

It is a dynamic historically relationship the one outlined by Philippe Daverio around the question of the freedom of artists to the task of interpreting the truth of faith: "The relation with the dogma is perennial, and is taken more seriously after the Trento council . But the problem of freedom, in fact, had never place because there was an unwritten code of the perception of art, which is valid up to modernity. Then everything changes. "

What are the signs of mutation?

For example the Chagall's White Crucifixion, so beloved by Pope Francis, is painted is clearly a transformation in progress. Here is total freedom: from the fact that it is a crucifixion painted by a jew. Today we accept freedom that were unacceptable. But changes are produced outside the Church. Up to the Counter-Reformation, however, take place according to the mood of the story, in which the realpolitik is more effective than theology. "

Today, art and religion have lost contact, but the sacred has not stop to arouse interest, even if used with extreme freedom.

"The detachment is in truth among all the arts and religion. Even the architecture, I must say, does not give brilliant results. The only area where the dialogue is really alive is cinema, just because is forced to a popular culture verification . A relation that the visual arts use to had. For this reason, beyond the problems of freedom between artists and clients, the dialogue with the faith is so hard. "
